Steve Hanks was born in San Diego (California, USA) in 1949. From early childhood he spent much time on the ocean coast. When the boy was walking to school, the family moved to New Mexico. After school, Steve goes to the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco, which ends with honors. In 1976 he began working in the designer Campfire Girl’s camp (New Mexico). For several years Hanks experimented with different techniques: oil and writes watercolor, drawing in pencil, working with acrylic paints. Gradually, he produced his own style, which the artist calls “emotional realism“. Most often, he writes of people, and it is not just portraits, but it’s hard lined compositions in which the details play a big role. Hanks is constantly among the top ten American artists (in the polls US Art Magazine). Many critics acknowledge Steve Hanks one of the best contemporary watercolorists.
